Grampians Trio

Piano Trios are one of the most common forms of chamber music. The standard trio includes violin and cello. The piano trios of the classical era are dominated by the piano with the string doubling the piano parts. This was usually to give pianos more resonance as at that time pianos were quite weak in tone. But by the 19th century all three instruments hold their own. The piano has both solo and accompanying roles which free up the strings to play in a more soloistic fashion.

Over the centuries the piano trio has gained a repertoire of exceptional size and richness. Many composers were also pianists and reserved their most expressive and intimate compositions for this ensemble.

The Grampians Trio will perform Trio no 1 in G minor 'Elegiac' by Rachmaninov and Trio op 90 'Dumky' by Dvorák.
