Forsyth Barr Matinee Series 2: Musical Prodigies

Musical Prodigies - Mozart, Mendelssohn and Prokofiev

Patrick Burns - Conductor
Todd Gibson-Cornish - Bassoon

Prokofiev: Symphony No. 1, Classical
Mozart: Bassoon Concerto
Mendelssohn: Symphony No. 1

This programme contrasts early works of three musical child prodigies from three different eras.

For his first symphony, composed in 1917, the 26-year-old Prokofiev set out to write the sort of symphony Haydn might have composed if he'd lived in the 20th century. The symphony illustrates Prokofiev's characteristic tongue-in-cheek melodies, witty harmony and sparkling orchestral writing.

Mozart's bassoon concerto, written in 1774 when he was only 18, was his first woodwind concerto. It is the most often performed and studied piece in the bassoon repertory.

Mendelssohn's first symphony, written in 1824 at age 15, displays his typical elegance, energy, clarity and inventiveness.

Patrick Burns conducts performances with many Australian orchestras, Australian Ballet and Opera Australia, and also in Serbia, Bulgaria and the UK.

Since Todd Gibson-Cornish's initial sessions on the mini-bassoon with his father, DSO's Principal Oboe Nick Cornish, his career has been meteoric, graduating from London's Royal College of Music, playing as Guest Principal in prestigious UK orchestras, and at age 21 being appointed as Sydney Symphony Orchestra's Principal Bassoon.
